Directions: The festival is held on the grounds of St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church in Des Allemands. From New Orleans, take I-10 W to I-310. Head south on I-310 for about 12 miles. Exit to the right on Hwy. 90 W to Houma. Continue on Hwy. 90 W through Paradis to Des Allemands. Upon reaching Des Allemands, St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church will be on the right side of LA 631 in the Des Allemands Business District. 17324 La. 631, Des Allemands, La. 70030
Our HistoryThe Rev. William McCallion founded the festival in 1975 to raise money for St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church and to stimulate the economy. It has grown into one of the area's most popular attractions. In 1975, Gov. Edwin Edwards signed a proclamation declaring Des Allemands the Catfish Capital of the World, and in 1980 the Legislature passed a resolution naming it the Catfish Capital of the Universe.
Our Attractions Pay-one-price rides, live bands, magic shows, balloon animals, children's games, food, a country store, a plant booth and Craft Booths will be open throughout the weekend. Saturday, June 22, 2013 SWAMP PEOPLE, Bruce and Tyler will be here 12noon til. Highlights Saturday include a catfish-eating contest. Saturday and Sunday we have a Catfish Skinning Exhibition. Foods Catfish - platters (catfish and white beans) , catfish boulettes, seafood gumbo with potato salad, catfish sauce piquant, jambalaya, pastalaya, shrimp po-boys, catfish po-boys, fried crab claws, hotdogs, hamburgers, fried onion sticks, french fries, nachos & cheese, chili fritos, chicken strips, snoballs, and homemade cakes.
